Department of Children & Families

The Florida Department of Children and Families oversees the care of individuals in institutions such as nursing homes and mental health facilities in addition to licensing child care workers and foster parents. As such, there are a number of instances in which Department of Children and Families fingerprinting could be required.

Child Care Workers

A number of individuals could need to undergo Department of Children and Families fingerprinting because they work directly with minors. Some examples of these individuals include day care workers, child enrichment services providers, residential child care workers, foster parents and employees of child placing agencies. In addition, those who work at or volunteer at a summer or recreational camp that deals primarily with children must also be screened, unless they work fewer than ten hours per month.

Mental Health Workers

The law also requires Department of Children and Families fingerprinting for people who are employed in the mental health field. Among those who must be screened are direct care providers who have “face-to-face contact with a client while providing services” or those who “have access to a client’s living areas, or to a client’s funds or personal property.”As such, most workers at residential treatment centers must be screened, to include those who work in housekeeping, maintenance or food service. In addition, directors, staff members, and professional clinicians must also be screened.

Executive Requirements

Just because executives of certain companies do not come in contact with children or mental health patients does not preclude them from undergoing Department of Children & Families fingerprinting. The law also requires “owners, directors and chief financial officers of service providers” to be screened as well. In addition, they are also responsible for ensuring that all service providers who do have direct contact with children or mentally handicapped clients undergo the required screening before being hired.
